Steve Rossi

I am excited to be participating in the Art in Odd Places public art festival this year taking place along the length of 14th Street in Manhattan from October 5—15. The project that I’ll be contributing is titled Reciprocal Ladder and involves the rolling, pushing, and pulling of a circular ladder form, 8 feet in diameter along the sidewalks of 14th Street. I’m interested in subverting the familiar function and metaphor of a ladder, widely seen to symbolically represent upward mobility and the social hierarchy that is established by that perception and understanding. By converting the form of a ladder into a rolling reciprocal structure, my intentions with this project are to establish a symbolic public action that emphasizes an alternative egalitarian mode of social organization by presenting a possibility for what a “ladder of success” might look like with no beginning or end, top or bottom.
